Her Beauty

She is all that. She is all that simply because she has never been told otherwise.

At an early age her family told her she was magnificent. They told her she was beautiful and smart. The world was hers, to be done with what she wanted. Her confidence was planted deep.

Others, who might not be aware that she is the gatekeeper and keyholder might think of her as ordinary. Mundanely wrapped in an awkwardly spoilt package.

She is the way she is because she never doubted her family one iota. They need a mirror.

I remember my da tellin' me I was stupid and me mum so certain that I'd never amount to anything! I remember the police tellin' me that I belonged in jail and my drug dealer sayin' that I had a real future. I can recall once after nearly drowning my pops tellin’ me mum not to worry “them’s who is meant to hang won’t drown.” The FBI said they wanted me, while my adopted country deported me. Canada won’t let me cross the border without a deposit, while L.A. says if I come back I can stay in a prison cell for the rest of my life. AA says ‘keep comin’ back” – my boss says “you’re givin’ me a heart attack!” I keep tellin’ myself its all right: abandon the ego, dust off the self-esteem, and then I hear all those old voices tellin’ me to settle for what I got.

Thankfully today I just don’t listen to them any more…
